Hilton Head Island Religion and Spirituality

Hilton Head Offers Spiritual Variety

Since Hilton Head Island first began developing over 50 years ago, it has become a charming, tight-knit community flourishing in culture and history. Numerous places of worship have formed throughout the island giving residents a variety of options. There are religious institutions conveniently located on every area of the island. With a variety of worship institutions to choose from, new residents find that joining a new congregation is an easy transition. Locals stay active in their congregations helping them to grow and expand.

Although Hilton Head is a relatively younger community, residents and owners of Hilton Head real estate are able to enjoy churches that have been around for many years. The first church on the island, The First African Baptist Church, was founded in 1862. Five other churches have grown from its beginnings located throughout Hilton Head and the surrounding Lowcountry areas.

During the 1950’s, The First Presbyterian Church was founded in Honey Horn Plantation located on the north end of the island. It began with only a few members and has grown into a strong congregation that still resides on the Honey Horn Plantation grounds. Many churches that began as small congregations have now grown larger over the years offering numerous activities and worship services. Just over the bridge in Bluffton and the surrounding areas, places of worship are easy to find with ample opportunity for growth and future churches.

Located throughout the island are eight Baptist churches, two Catholic churches, two Christian Science churches, two Episcopal, two Lutheran, one Methodist, three Non-Denominational, three Presbyterian, one African Methodist, three Full gospel, and one Jewish Synagogue.

From older historical churches to new congregations, Bluffton, South Carolina, offers numerous places of worship. The Church of the Cross withstood Sherman’s troops and is still standing today. Built in 1854, Church of the Cross is located alongside stunning views of the May River. In 2005, the new Buckwalter Parkway Campus opened adding on to the congregation and offering educational opportunities to children.

St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church was established in 1995 with a small congregation of 90 members. It now has become a large church with over 4,500 members. A variety of worship institutions are scattered throughout Bluffton including Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Jehovah’s Witness, Methodist, Non-denominational and Presbyterian.

Hardeeville and Ridgeland both have numerous places of worship for prospective buyers of Hilton Head real estate, including historical churches that survived the Civil War, like the Hardeeville Methodist Church. Residents and real estate owners have the opportunity to attend Pentecostal, Abundant Life, Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic and Non-Denominational churches.

In Ridgeland, the Gillisonville Baptist Church was spared by Sherman during the Civil War and has been well preserved. Residents of this area have the opportunity to attend several places of worship including Baptist, Church of God, Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, Episcopal, Pentecostal, and Non-Denominational.

Residents and owners of Okatie real estate are ideally located between Bluffton and Beaufort, creating numerous religious opportunities. With the area rapidly developing, there is plenty of room for additional places of worship. The churches in Okatie are Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist.

Daufuskie Island has religious institutions located right on the island; the Bible Baptist Church and the Church of Latter Day Saints. //
